Insects

Megan and I went to the Sun Lakes area of central Washington last weekend and explored around a bit.

While wandering among the rocks and brush I came upon this scene.

I'm curious what kind of ants and beetle these are. I also wonder if the ants killed the beetle or found it already dead. In the full size version of the image hairs are visible on the hind end of the ant (the metasoma?)

Wow, what an awesome picture! The beetle looks like the kind of bug that we called a "stink bug" when I was a kid. When they were threatened, they would lower their front legs and raise their hind end, and if you kept bothering them they let off this foul smell. But it's hard to tell if the one in your picture is the same kind. I'm guessing that the ants are carpenter ants.

Hey, thanks.

In looking at some carpenter ant pictures they do look pretty similar.

Roy suggests that it is a type of Darkling beetle (a common large beetle on the east side)
